Using Hostgator with GoDaddy

It is pretty common that someone will purchase their domain names from one company, but prefers to actually host their website at another. The most common reason to do this is to save money, and the most common combination is using GoDaddy domains with a Hostgator hosting account.

The steps required to do this are actually pretty simple, and you will know how to host a GoDaddy domain on Hostgator by the end of this article. To do this, all that is necessary is to change the Nameserver settings of your domain name so that they point at your Hostgator account, where your actual website files will be stored.

Finding Your Hostgator Nameservers
Hostgator has made it very easy to find the correct nameservers that you need to use with your account. All you have to do is login to your Hostgator cpanel and the information will be on the home page. In the left panel there are different blocks that contain all kinds of information about your account, as well as various offers from Hostgator.

You will want to scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen, and find the last block which is titled, Account Information. In this block you will find your primary and secondary nameservers. Typically they will look similar to ns.123.hostgator.com. You will need both of these nameservers so keep this page open, you can come back and copy them in a few minutes.

Editing Your Domain Information in GoDaddy
Now that we know where our nameservers are located, we need to change these settings for the domain name in your GoDaddy account. Start by logging into your GoDaddy account manager. The first page that you see after logging in should have a list of the domain names currently in your account.

Find the domain name that you want to edit in this list. Just to the right of the domain name you will see a hyperlink that says (Advanced Details). Go ahead and click this link to go to the page with all of your domain information. If you look on the left side of the screen below the domain information block you will see an area titled, Nameservers.

Here you just need to find the hyperlink that says, Set Nameservers, and click it. A pop-up screen will then display on your page so that you can change your nameserver settings. You will want to select the bottom bubble that states, I have specific nameservers for my domains.

In the middle of the pop-up there will be four blocks for entering nameservers one through four. Only the first two blocks are required, and they both have a red asterisk next to them. Now you need to go back to your hostgator account, then highlight and copy the first nameserver. Paste this information into the block in your GoDaddy account for nameserver one, repeat this step for nameserver two. Nameservers three and four are not required and will be left blank.

After that is done, just click the OK button at the bottom of the pop-up. As far as how to host a GoDaddy domain on Hostgator, this is all that there is to it. Your domain name will now be pointed at the files stored in your Hostgator account.

Here is an easy checklist for next time.
1) Login to Hostgator and retrieve Nameservers.
2) Login to GoDaddy and find the Domain Name that requires editing.
3) Select (Advanced Details) link.
4) Select “Set Nameservers” link. (Lower left side of page.)
5) Select the bubble stating “I have specific nameservers for my domains.”
6) Paste your Nameservers from Hostgator into blocks one and two.
7) Click the OK button.

Get a Domain Name On Godaddy

Getting a domain name is a fairly straightforward process, as there are many different companies which offer them, and they usually have very simple online software which allows you to purchase and manage a domain without having to have too much technical knowledge. In this article we’ll look at what a domain name is, how to pick one, and then how to choose a place to register and manage it.

Domain Names Explained

Domain names are the main namespace on the internet – they are how people find websites. There are two parts to a domain name, the domain name, and the top-level domain. In the URL example.com, example is the domain name, and .com is the top-level domain. Technically, your computer doesn’t know how to get to a website when you type in a domain. It has to use Domain Name System (DNS) servers to find the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the site you are looking for. It then uses the IP address (a really long number) to find the server and request the webpage.

Fortunately for you, most domain name registrars make it easy, with step-by-step software on their site which allows you to pick out and purchase a domain name without having to worry too much about the technical details. A domain name registrar has to be accredited with ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, so registering a domain name isn’t something you can do yourself.

Picking a Domain Name

Picking a domain name can be difficult these days because so many of the good ones are taken. Unless you have a specific reason to use an alternate top-level domain, like .org or .net, you will probably want to use a .com name, just because it is most memorable and people will often use .com by mistake when they are trying to go to a different top-level domain. Unfortunately, many of the good .com domain names have already been taken – either by a legitimate organization, or by a domain squatter who wants to sell the domain you want to you for only $1,000. You will need to decide if you want to pick a creative name on the .com domain, or if you will have to pick an alternate top-level domain.

Registering Your Domain

Find a Place to Register It

There are many good places to register your domain. GoDaddy is a very good choice and one of the most popular domain registrars. Other perfectly fine options exist, and any ICANN accredited registrar will work. For simplicity’s sake, you will probably want to purchase your hosting at the same place you register your domain.

Actually Getting it Registered

Registering the domain should be fairly easy – just follow the steps on the website of the domain registrar you are using. GoDaddy has a tool on their home page which allows you to check if your domain is available, and you get the option to purchase it as soon as you check it. You just follow the standard online check-out procedure, and then your domain is registered. After that you should be able to log-in and alter any settings that you need to.

Register a Domain Name With GoDaddy

Thanks to the GoDaddy website company, the chance to own your own domain is easier and cheaper than most other website companies. Your intention may not be to run and operate your own website but to sell the domain. Either method, using GoDaddy is easier and can be used for a number of different web domains.

Logging Into GoDaddy Is Your First Step

The first thing that you want to do is to log onto the GoDaddy.com website. Here you will want to search for the domain you want to obtain. If you are looking for a specific website that is already taken, perhaps you could contact the company already using it and see if they will sell you the rights to that specific web address. There are a number of different web address endings that you can choose from such as gov and biz. Once you have selected the address you want to use, you will want to select the ending and continue.

Choosing Your Domain Address

Choose how many of the domain endings you want to purchase the rights to. If you want to purchase all the different options that are available, you will select the ones that you want and will then continue. You will be prompted to continue, click on the yes button or simply click on continue to checkout link. Once here, you will create a new GoDaddy account which will have you enter your personal information or log into an account you already have. If you already have your own account, you will then need to enter your username and password in order to continue to your account. Once you have entered this information, you will then be able to continue.

Continuing with GoDaddy Registration Process

The orange button says continue and will have you double check the registration information. Once you have looked over all the information and have decided that it looks accurate and is right, you will then want to continue on with the rest of the registration information. If there is something that does not look right, you will be able to go back and change the information now or you can continue on with the rest of the registration process and change the information later.

Inputting All Your Information

The next step is going to ask you to input the information found on your credit card. The credit card information will ask you to choose which of the following credit cards you are using and will have to have the credit card number. Once you input the credit card number, you will then need to enter the expiration date on the credit card. Once you have done this, you will need to turn the card over and input the security code found on the back of the credit card. The security code will allow the company to know that the credit card number and information is accurate and is your credit card and not a stolen credit card number. Once you do this, you will need to enter the billing area code for your credit card and once you enter this, select continue. If you have a discount code available for use on this purchase, you will want to enter it now. This will allow you to save a few dollars on the purchase of your new domain address. If you are not aware of any discount codes, then you will simply continue. The GoDaddy website company will authorize the purchase and will then give you a confirmation number. Once you have the confirmation number, you will then proceed to the account page and will be able to setup your personal website. If you do not have time to continue on with building of your website now, you will be able to return later on to edit the website. When you return at a later date, you are going to need to know the username and password and will then be taken to the management tools for that particular website. Once done, you will then want to hit the publish button and proceed.

That’s all it takes to register a domain on the GoDaddy website company.

GoDaddy Web Hosting Instructions

GoDaddy is probably best known for their domain name registration service, but they also offer hosting packages. They offer a wide variety of packages, form basic economy hosting that can be less than $5 a month, to full dedicated servers for large corporate website. They are particularly known for their very cheap hosting, but still offer a full range of features with their hosting packages. Let’s look a bit closer at the various hosting options that GoDaddy offers, how to choose the one that’s right for you, and even how to get it set up.

Hosting Packages

You can choose from basic web hosting packages. They have general purpose web hosting, as well as hosting that is specifically geared toward WordPress or Podcasting. They have also recently started offering Grid Hosting, which promises instant scalability should your website suddenly become popular and get slammed with traffic. Most of their basic hosting options come in three different flavors – basic, deluxe, and unlimited. Even the basic package has quite a bit of storage and bandwidth for a small personal website, but if you don’t like limits, the unlimited package is quite affordable.

On the higher end, they offer virtual dedicated servers, as well as full dedicated servers. These can be quite expensive though, and are generally aimed at large corporations.

Choosing the Right Package and Purchasing it

If you are not sure what package you will need, you can try and do a little bit of math to figure out how much bandwidth and storage you will need. Figure out how much of your website the average user will access and how many users you expect. For instance, if you have a small text only site with 5 pages, but your average user will only look at three of them, and each page is 1 MB, then multiply 3 by the number of average expected users and that’s how much bandwidth you will need (in MegaBytes). You will probably want to allow a bit of room for growth and expansion, as websites can sometimes get slammed when a story gets popular. A website for a photographer needs a lot more bandwidth and storage than a basic blog, because they will be storing lots of huge files. Also, remember that even if you have a simple WordPress (or similar) blog, your database can grow pretty rapidly if you get a lot of comments.

Once you have decided on the package that you want, select it and check out. The GoDaddy check-out process is fairly standard and similar to a lot of other online retailers.

Setting up Your Web Hosting

Once you have purchased your web hosting, you will need to upload your site and possibly tweak some settings. You can use any FTP client (GoDaddy should set you up with a password when you purchase your hosting), or use their online uploaded. They have a feature-packed online control panel for your web hosting which allows you to see and tweak settings. You will also need to make sure that your site is linked to domain name so that people can get to it.

Hosting Email With GoDaddy

Hosting Email With GoDaddy

GoDaddy is best known as a domain name registrar, and also as an affordable web host, but lesser known is their great email hosting features. There are several different ways to get your email hosted, depending on whether you want a la carte email hosting, or email hosting in addition to other hosting services. Let’s take a look at the different email hosting options that you can get with GoDaddy, and how to set them up.

Many Different Options

  • Basic, A La Carte Email Hosting – If all you want is basic email hosting without any other features, GoDaddy offers very cheap email hosting. One common use of this is set up email at your own domain. This way, you can have you@yourname.com, instead of @gmail.com or something similar. This sounds a lot more professional, and looks pretty cool, too. With the basic email hosting feature, you can get just email and a domain, without actually having to purchase any web hosting.
  • Other Forms of A La Carte Email – GoDaddy also offers several other types of email only packages, like one geared at BlackBerry users, and one that integrates with Microsoft Exchange, for corporate users.
  • Email with Hosting – Most GoDaddy web hosting packages also offer some amount of email hosting, so that you can have an address at your website’s domain.
  • Integrating Third Party Tools With GoDaddy – One other option you have is to use a third party tool, like Google Apps, with a GoDaddy domain. You can purchase a domain from GoDaddy, and then use Google Apps to get a Gmail account using your domain name – still you@yourdomain.com, but you get to use the Gmail interface instead of GoDaddy’s. Plenty of other similar tools exist, but Google Apps is one of the more common options.

Setting Up Your Email

Here’s what you need to know in order to set up your email, depending on what option you choose from above.

  • Basic Email – Setting up a basic email hosting account isn’t hard, and can all be done with GoDaddy’s easy to use online tools. It doesn’t really require any technical knowledge, and you don’t have to get your hands too dirty getting it set up.
  • Specialized Email – you will have to go through some extra steps if you are setting up your email with a special client, like a mobile device, or a corporate Exchange server, but the process is still fairly straightforward.
  • If you purchase email as a part of your web hosting, the controls for setting up and maintaining your email will be a part of your web hosting control package, which can be accessed form the GoDaddy website when you sign in and go to the hosting dashboard.
  • Integrating third party tools requires the most work out of all these options, and the instruction will vary depending on what service you are using. Consult the documentation and help articles on the clients you are using for more help. Google Apps has a complete guide to setting up a GoDaddy domain to direct email to your Google Apps account.
